Professional Experience

Cheryl's practice is focused on Family Law including the negotiation and preparation of domestic contracts and she has a special interest in the area of adoption law. Cheryl has practised in the area of adoption since 1979, including advising or representing adoption agencies and licensees, adoptive parents and birth parents in adoption proceedings. Many of these cases involve interjurisdictional issues.

Cheryl is an adoption licensee, licensed by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to be responsible for private adoption placements in Ontario of children born in Ontario and in relation to children being brought into Ontario from a number of other Canadian provinces and states of the United States. She has been a licensee under the Child and Family Services Act (Ontario) since 1985 when permanent licenses for private adoption were first introduced by legislation. She is also licensed in relation to United States/ Ontario adoption under the Intercountry Adoption Act (Ontario).

Cheryl has organized and participated in many training sessions for licensees and approved adoption practitioners and has been responsible for the preparation of training manuals and case law materials for these groups. She has also written for and spoken at other professional training sessions and conferences for lawyers, judges and social workers and has spoken at public information forums.

Cheryl was a member of the Advisory Committee on the preparation of Standards and Guidelines for licensees and was a member of the Minister's Adoption Disclosure Implementation Advisory Committee. She was also a member of an interdisciplinary committee attempting to establish a code of practice in relation to reproductive technology cases.

Cheryl was a founding member of the Association of Practitioners in Private Adoption and served as a member of the Ethics Committee of that association.

Cheryl is a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.
